One of the most popular books in laboratory management is now updated with the recently released second edition of Laboratory Administration for Pathologists from the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Publications.
Comprehensive in its coverage of management fundamentals, this guide is an essential reference for anatomic and clinical pathologists, particularly those new to directing a laboratory. Chapters cover laboratory information systems, quality, patient safety, personnel, laboratory regulations, legal affairs and law, ethics, as well as financial management for the lab and pathology practice, and more.
“Unique in laboratory medicine, this book is written by pathologists, for pathologists,” says lead editor Elizabeth A. Wagar, MD, PhD, FCAP. “It looks at vital issues—such as staffing, personnel, and regulatory change—from the pathologist’s perspective.”
The popular first edition, originally published in 2011, set the standards for leadership and management in the laboratory. The second edition provides guidance for today’s health care climate, which includes changing regulations, a clinical workforce challenged with symptoms of burnout, and the continued quest for patient safety and improved outcomes.
“Over time, we needed to address these changes, especially in the areas of quality, safety, and regulatory affairs,” Wagar explains. “Plus, the second edition allowed us to offer wider perspectives through expanded authorship and editorship.”
The second edition cultivates more diverse authors, ranging from older to younger pathologists from different regions and a variety of practice models. In addition to Dr. Wagar, editors include Michael B. Cohen, MD, FCAP, Donald S. Karcher, MD, FCAP, and Gene P. Siegal, MD, PhD, FCAP.
