Engaged Leadership Academy

The Engaged Leadership Academy (ELA) is a two and a half day strategic communications and leadership course provided by the CAP to foster pathology leaders. ELA leaders possess the skills, tools, and confidence to be front and center in their health care settings and to engage their clinical colleagues, administrators, government agencies, and advocacy groups for the benefit of pathology and the patient.

In addition to enhancing the skills of the pathologists taking this course, completion of ELA training entitles the pathologist to become a member of our Engaged Leaders Network (ELN).

  • As an ELA participant you will:

    • Learn critical communication skills while earning CME credit
    • Strengthen your ability to demonstrate the value of the work you do to colleagues, legislators, and the public.
    • Enjoy your learning experience with other CAP member pathologists from around the country.
  • As an ELA graduate you will:

    • Be prepared to lobby for your practice and your profession both inside and outside your institution.
    • Receive the support of the CAP in various engagement opportunities.
    • Become a member of the CAP Engaged Leadership Network, a unique group of CAP members who are changing the perceptions of pathology.

Expectations of ELA Participants

We look for different applicants than many other pathology leadership-oriented programs. For example, the length of your CV is not what is important. The Engaged Leadership Academy focuses on creatives, makers, innovators, advocates, entrepreneurs, and those who want to make a difference in the pathology community.

Preparation for our Engaged Leaders Network

Besides teaching communication skills, presentations at the ELA will furnish you with examples of opportunities for participation in ELN activities. Networking with the ELA instructors and participants, as well as with fellow ELN members, provides you with an abundance of ways to tailor your ELN activities to your interests, skills, and available sources.

Engaged Leaders Network

The ELN is a group of dynamic pathologists who participate in a wide variety of activities designed to demonstrate the value of pathologists to the community and to other professional colleagues. ELN members are expected to commit to such activities and to complete an activity tracking list on a regular basis.

The Value of Participating in the ELN

Although Professionalism and Interpersonal Communication are two of the "Six Core Competencies" outlined by the ACGME for every physician, there are very few opportunities for physicians to be educated in these areas. In particular, pathologists have an ever-increasing need for these skills in the current health care environment. With the aid of communications professionals as well as fellow pathologists, you will learn how to communicate effectively with other physicians, C-suite executives, patients and patient advocacy groups, politicians, and the public at large. In addition, as part of the ELN, you will have the opportunity to network with like-minded pathologists.

Networking Opportunities

In addition to impressive accomplishments, fine character and a good heart are two very important traits we look for in every potential engaged leader. Engaged leaders demonstrate the Core Competencies of Professionalism and Interpersonal Communication in everything they do. More than anything, this focus on character has defined the success our program; ELN members routinely find ways to "do good while doing well". You will benefit greatly from the special networking opportunities the ELN provides.
