It is presented to an individual who has consistently demonstrated outstanding performance as faculty for a CAP education activity and/or has made outstanding contributions in the development of education activities for pathologists and/or laboratory professionals.
Sherrie L. Perkins, MD, PhD, FCAP
The College of American Pathologists presents Sherrie L. Perkins, MD, PhD, FCAP, with the 2019 CAP Outstanding Educator Award for her continuous work in supporting the development of CAP members’ knowledge and skills through hematology education.
Dr. Perkins has been a consistent, strong supporter and advocate for educating pathologists and pathologists in training. She served as section editor and major contributor in the development and revision of the Color Atlas of Hematology, second edition, and participated in developing the Hematology Benchtop Reference Guide, Bone Marrow Benchtop Reference Guide, and Urinalysis Benchtop Reference Guide. These resources, which are top-selling CAP publications, are staples for practicing pathologists and laboratory professionals.
Dr. Perkins is an internationally recognized hematopathologist as well as a tenured CAP annual meeting faculty member. Readily sharing of her expertise, she has impacted the knowledge and skills of more than 1,300 course participants at eight of the past 15 annual meetings and is also presenting at CAP19. Her passion for teaching is reflected in the consistently high ratings she receives for overall course value and faculty effectiveness (>4.7, on average, on a 5-point scale) and participant “intent to apply” (4.6 on average). Dr. Perkins effectively uses case study discussions to engage course participants, and she has authored nine CAP self-assessment modules (SAMs) since 2011. These contributions are helping pathologists meet their American Board of Pathology continuing certification requirements.
Dr. Perkins was active in the development and launch of the online Hematopathology Continuing Medical Education/SAM (HPATH CME/SAM), a case-based program designed to educate pathologists, hematopathologists, and hematologists with an interest in hematopathology to assess and improve their diagnostic skills. She also is a reviewer of every continuing education (CE) and self-claiming CE educational write-up that the Hematology and Clinical Microscopy Committee develops for hematology proficiency testing and contributes write-ups regularly.
Dr. Perkins is currently a professor of pathology at the University of Utah Health Sciences, as well as CEO of ARUP Laboratories in Salt Lake City.
