Ex Vivo Microscopy (EVM) Systems: Functional Requirements and CAP Checklist Compliance

In vivo microscopy (IVM) systems utilize imaging technologies such as confocal microscopy, optical coherence tomography, and multiphoton microscopy to provide real-time tissue or cellular level details. It is possible to adapt these systems for use in the Anatomic Pathology laboratory (ex vivo microscopy) while still meeting CAP Anatomic Pathology checklist requirements. Doing so also enables application with real-time results for histologic evaluation of specimens for margins, assessment of tissue adequacy for diagnosis, and selection of tissue for molecular studies or biorepository.
