Notification to CAP-Accredited Laboratories: Glucose Activity Code Update

Dear Laboratory Director,

You previously received a notification from the College of American Pathologists’ (CAP) Laboratory Accreditation Program (LAP) regarding the discontinuation of required proficiency testing (PT) for waived whole blood glucose on glucose meters effective in 2017.

PT enrollment is still required for waived whole blood glucose not performed on a glucose meter (eg, iSTAT, Hemocue, Piccolo, etc.). To accommodate this change, LAP retired the previous general “glucose, whole blood, waived” codes and created two separate activity codes/descriptions to differentiate between waived whole blood glucose run on meters and waived whole blood glucose run on other analyzers (non-meter). Your activity menu has been updated to reflect these changes.

Please see the table below:

SubdisciplineOld code/description (Column A)New codes/description (Column B)
Chemistry2704 Glucose, whole blood, waived6315
Glucose, whole blood, waived
(non-meter)

6314
Glucose, whole blood, waived
(glucose meter)
Point of Care-Waived2708 Glucose, whole blood, waived, POCT6313
Glucose, whole blood, waived
(non-meter), POCT

6312
Glucose, whole blood, waived
(glucose meter), POCT

Action

  1. If your laboratory's test menu included codes from Column A, they were automatically replaced with the two corresponding codes in column B.
  2. Access and review your activity menu via e-LAB Solutions Suite (log in required).
  3. If you need to delete one of the new codes from your menu, you may make this change online or submit a Test/Activity Menu Change form.

If you have questions regarding this change, please contact a PT Compliance representative at 1-800-323-4040 ext. 6052, 1-847-832-7000 ext. 6052, or ptcn@cap.org.

Thank you for your ongoing support of the CAP's Laboratory Accreditation Program.
